RFID
Technology for Inventory Accuracy in Supply Chain

Inventory
accuracy is a problem with many inventory management systems. Improved
inventory accuracy results in better execution of replenishment policies thus
the supply chain runs more efficiently. Radio frequency identification (RFID)
is a common tool that researchers and practitioners recommend organizations to
implement in order to improve the inventory accuracy of the supply chain. Even
though it has advantages, currently RFID is not a perfect technology and often
does not reach its maximum performance. In our study we investigate how
imperfect information from RFID technology can be used in inventory management
in multi-echelon supply chains and how inventory information provided by RFID
systems can affect inventory control decisions. A simulation modeling-based
approach is used to understand the potential uses and impacts of imperfect RFID
data in supply chains. In addition, the study is extended to identify
stock-loss issues in retail environment. Stochastic models are developed to
predict stock-loss in stores with less then perfect inventory visibility and
make replenishment decisions accordingly.
